A Study on Status of Allied Health Sciences Education in Junior Colleges

Abstract
Education to train manpower in the field of allied health sciences was started when a junior college of medical technology opened five related subjects in 1963 in Korea. Not only had the field of allied health sciences among junior colleges the longest tradition, but also it has shown a significant development both in quality and quantity.
This study was to provide materials for the improvement in education of allied health sciences by analyzing materials for the past and the future in that field. The results were as followings:
1. Departments of allied health sciences increased starting from 5 in 1963 to 25 in 1997. Considering a specific distribution of major, there were 14 departments of medical technology, 7 environmental hygine, 3 skin care and beauty and 1 medicinal foodstuffs.
2. An entrance quota of the 25 educational courses (55 colleges) as of 1997 was 18,340 in total.
3. Five departments had three years of schooling year and twenty departments two years of schooling year for junior colleges of allied health sciences. Required credits to graduate were 120 and 80 for 3 year ones and 2 year ones respectively.
4. Registered students in 1996 were 59,868 in total.
5. The percentage of employment of graduates from 1992 to 1996 ranged from 61.6% to 74.3%.
6. The percentage of licence acquirement among graduates showed a range from 42.3% to 66.7%.
